Q & A

Who can attend Camp Susquehanna ?
Camp Susquehanna is for any child, 7 to 16 years of age who has sustained a severe burn injury. A severe burn injury is considered to be one that required at least four days in a burn center, affecting the face, head, hands, feet and/or trunk. If your child does not fit our eligibility requirements, he or she may be considered on an individual basis.

• What is Camp Susquehanna ?
It's a chance for each child to meet other children who have also experienced a burn injury. Programmed activities vary with each camp but always include swimming, games, arts and crafts, ‘Beauty Parlor', fun and character building activities including workshops on learning new coping skills.

• Where is Camp Susquehanna ?
Camp Susquehanna is held on a beautiful college campus, usually at Franklin and Marshall College or Millersville University in Lancaster County.

• How much does camp cost?
Nothing! Camp is sponsored entirely by the M. Elvin Byler Memorial SERTOMA CLUB.

What about transportation?
Unless private transportation is arranged, campers will have bus transportation from St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Crozer-Chester Hospital , or Mercy Hospital ( Pittsburgh ) that will take them directly to camp. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to bring and pick up their child from one of the meeting places of the bus. Some children may be picked up at airports by special arrangement. Schedules will be provided with confirmation of acceptance.

• Who are the counselors?
Most of the counselors are adult burn survivors, healthcare professionals, burn care staff, firefighters and SERTOMA Support Staff. All our staff have been carefully screened and undergo criminal background checks. We maintain approximately 2:1 camper/counselor ratio.

• What about my child's special medical needs?
Camp Susquehanna has qualified nurses on staff who will dispense medications, change dressings, provide first aid, and perform medical duties as required. If a child has a medical emergency that requires a visit to the hospital, one of our medical team will accompany him/her.
